El Totumo Mud Volcano, or Volcán de Lodo El Totumo, is a mud volcano popular for its mud-bath, only 40 minutes from Cartagena de Indias.
The volcano is about 15 m (49 ft) tall and accessible by a staircase that leads to the crater. The crater can accommodate about 10 to 15 people at a time. There, one can bathe in the dense mud and have the option of receiving a massage from one of the attendants. The experience is then followed by a bath to remove the mud in a nearby lake by local women.
According to local lore, the volcano used to spew fire, lava and ashes. A local priest, thinking it was the work of the Devil, turned the lava into mud by sprinkling holy water into it.
The clean up bath in the lake is thorough and may require you to remove your bathing suit to clean up the mud.
